Alex Rodriguez admits he almost rejected the Yankees' farewell plan

Alex Rodriguez's week-long goodbye to the New York Yankees will conclude Friday night in the Bronx when he plays one final game in pinstripes.

That was one of his wishes when the club informed him that it would be releasing him at some point and how it went about it was his choice. After announcing the news last Sunday, A-Rod wanted to fly his closest friends and family into New York so they could see him play one more home game with the Yankees.

That whole plan almost never happened, though. In an interview with YES Network's Michael Kay, A-Rod admitted that he almost rejected the Yankees' stance that he was no longer valuable to the club.

The reason Rodriguez gave thought to spurning the Yankees' plan is obvious: It's not clear in his mind that he's finished playing baseball for good.

Rodriguez was very clear not to use the word "retire" when addressing his future, and he won't yet concede that he's playing his final MLB game.
