Indians rookie Adam Plutko's wife saved him from missing his call to the big leagues
Cleveland Indians rookie Adam Plutko got the call he's been waiting his entire life for this past weekend -- but he would've missed it if it weren't for his wife.
After losing Carlos Carrasco to a devastating season-ending injury on Saturday, the Indians found themselves in need of another starting pitcher for their postseason run, so they called on the 24-year-old Plutko -- except, he didn't answer.
Plutko was a groomsman in his best friend's wedding in Beaumont, California, on Saturday, and shortly after the couple exchanged their wedding vows, Plutko's phone rang.
"They literally just got done saying ‘I do,’ and we got done taking the bridal party pictures and it was time to celebrate," Plutko recalled in an interview with Mike and Mike on Tuesday morning.
"I started getting a call from the head of player development with the Indians and I put it straight through to voicemail."
Plutko said at the time, he hadn't yet heard about Carrasco's injury, so he didn't think much of the call.
"What if it's important?" Plutko's wife, Allison, asked.
Plutko said he told his wife that the organization was probably just calling to conduct an exit interview, since he had just finished up his season with Triple-A Columbus on Sept. 10.
Moments later, as another bridal party photo was about to be snapped, the same number called again.
Thanks to his wife's advice, Plutko answered this time, and as he said: "The rest is history."
"My wife was with me right there, and I guess the moral of the story is your wife is always right. I should’ve just answered it the first time, so the joke’s on me."
He did it. It's all worth it for the moment we had last night. I love you, @Papaplut23! Now, let's go to work, baby! pic.twitter.com/QVAgWN2Erd

Plutko said he was thrilled to share the moment in person with his wife and his parents, who were also at the wedding.
"My parents were there so I just kinda grabbed them aside and we had our special moment, which was great. We got to be with each other for a second and that was the best part, because normally its over the phone. It was great that we were all kinda together."
Plutko then shared the news with the newlyweds, who he's been close friends with since he was 14 years old. The happy couple was excited for him but he was careful not to take away from their special day.
"Someone said ‘we should announce it over a loudspeaker’ and I was like ‘no, come on guys, it’s their wedding day," Plutko said. "What I did probably means nothing to this wedding … but it was great. Everyone was fired up and gave me a hug real quick and I stayed for the speeches and I left right after."

Plutko hopped on a plane the next morning and headed to Cleveland, where he was activated on Monday. Manager Terry Francona said the right-hander would be ready to pitch for the first-place Indians as early as Saturday.
