Mariners outfielder leaps into crowd to make a great catch
Red Sox rookie Andrew Benintendi may have had the best catch of the night (and maybe the season) on Monday night, but the incredible grab that Shawn O'Malley made deserves recognition as well.
Shortly after being inserted as a defensive replacement in the seventh inning against the Yankees in Seattle, the Mariners outfielder leaped into the crowd and snagged a foul ball that looked like it was sure to become a fan's souvenir. Instead, the ball ended up in O'Malley's glove, much to the amazement of the broadcast team and the crowd in attendance.
"You never know if you are going to catch it until you try," O'Malley said after the game, according to The Seattle Times. "It was just a last-minute instinct decision to give it a little extra and jump into the stands and see if I could come back with it. Fortunately, it wound up in my glove.”
The Seattle outfielder couldn't help but smile while walking back to his post in right field following the grab. Even he knew the catch was pretty special. Plus, he didn't get anything spilled on him in the process.
“I don’t smell any beer on me," he said. "That’s good, but I should have seen if somebody had a hot dog.”
