Report: Kris Bryant getting record-setting second-year deal from Chicago Cubs

Published Mar. 10, 2017 7:16 a.m. ET

Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant will have to wait a while for his huge MLB payday, such is life for young players under the league's salary structure.

In the meantime, it appears the Cubs will do their best t keep their young star happy.

The team will pay Bryant $1.05 million for the 2017 season -- a record for second-year players -- according to Jon Heyman at FanRag Sports.

The previous high for a second-year player was $1 million even, awarded to Mike Trout by the Los Angeles Angels in 2014.

Bryant won NL Rookie of the Year in 2015 and followed that up by winning the MVP in the Cubs' drought-busting championship season in 2016. He is considered a second-year player now because the Cubs delayed his call-up in 2015, delaying the start of his service time and giving the Cubs an extra year of control.

He'll be eligible for arbitration after the upcoming season. He would be eligible to enter free agency in 2021.
