The Red Sox have no interest in honoring Alex Rodriguez at Fenway Park

Alex Rodriguez will spend the next three days at Fenway Park, but he shouldn’t expect the same sendoff that Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and other outgoing Yankees legends have enjoyed in recent years.

There will not be an elaborate ceremony to honor Rodriguez, according to The Boston Globe, which reports: “If there is a public acknowledgment of his leaving the game, it will be brief.”

Rodriguez, of course, will play his final game for the Yankees – and perhaps his final game as a major leaguer – Friday at Yankee Stadium. But first comes this trip into enemy territory.

In 131 career games at Fenway Park, Rodriguez has hit .287 with 29 homers, 22 doubles and 88 RBI. Of course, he also had his share of forgettable moments, such as the time when Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek expressed his disapproval of the 14-time All-Star.

And considering the relationship the Red Sox fans have had with A-Rod over the years, it’s probably for the best that he isn’t trotted onto the field for a pregame ceremony. Sure, Boston fans booed Jeter and Rivera – as they do every Yankees player – but there also was an unstated respect for those future Hall of Famers. Not so with A-Rod, who reportedly will be in the starting lineup Thursday (but not Tuesday or Wednesday).
