F1 race red flagged after Kimi Raikkonen crash

Published Nov. 15, 2016 1:55 p.m. ET

Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix was red flagged on Lap 20 after Kimi Raikkonen crashed out of the race.

It has been raining all day at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo and the field was under their second Safety Car period of the race.

As the green flag waved again on Lap 20 of 71, Raikkonen lost control of his Ferrari on the front straight while running in third position. He was on the wet tires.

Raikkonen had initially spun across into the wall on the right-side of the circuit, and then spun back across the track before hitting the wall on the left. Somehow, the rest of the field was able to avoid him. However, debris from Raikkonen’s crash hit the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg, who sustained front wing damage.

Haas F1 driver Romain Grosjean and Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson had already crashed out of the race.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton currently leads the race.

All of the drivers were able to walk away, but there is no word yet on if or when the race will be restarted.
