No. 3 wide receiver spot up for grabs in wake of Simpson's suspension

Published Aug. 18, 2015 10:55 p.m. ET

After Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin, the No. 3 wide receiver spot is now a question mark.

Jerome Simpson was expected to land that role, but his suspension opens the door for either Quinton Patton, Bruce Ellington or DeAndrew White.

As a rookie last season, Ellington appeared in 13 games with the club, totaling six receptions for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

Patton has played in 10 games over two seasons with the 49ers, registering six receptions for 78 yards.

White went undrafted out of Alabama and recorded 40 receptions, 504 yards and four scores during his senior season.

So far, the reports out of camp have been nothing but positive surrounding the 6-foot, 190-pound receiver.

Ellington has been dealing with a muscle strain, so it could be a two-man race between Patton and White to land the job.
