Christian McCaffrey tries out a new position at his Stanford pro day
Christian McCaffrey made news for the wrong reasons at the Combine earlier this month after he turned in an unimpressive 10 reps in the bench press drill – the second-fewest among running back prospects in this year’s draft class.
The former Stanford standout turned heads again Thursday at his pro day – not so much for what he did but rather the position at which he worked. McCaffrey, a Heisman finalist in 2015 while playing running back, went through position drills at wide receiver while working out in front of scouts from all 32 teams on Stanford’s campus.
“It’s something I pride myself on, being extremely versatile and I feel like I can do that stuff,” McCaffrey said, via the Denver Post. “To show coaches I can play running back, I can play receiver, I can do all the return game stuff — that’s important to me.”
McCaffrey, who ran a 4.48 40-yard dash at the Combine, did not redo any of those tests Thursday, opting to display more of his overall football skills.

His versatility could help his draft stock in a running back class that includes expected first-rounders Leonard Fournette and Dalvin Cook. It’s not too surprising to see McCaffrey have some skills at receiver, considering his father, Ed, spent 14 years in the NFL at wideout. McCaffrey also did some catching out of the backfield while playing for the Cardinal, finishing his three-year career with 10 receiving touchdowns.
