Clay Harbor hoping for more opportunities with Jaguars

The offense implemented by new coordinator Greg Olson in Jacksonville is expected to rely heavily on the tight end. That's not surprising with free-agent arrival of Julius Thomas from the Denver Broncos.

But Olson's offense also should mean plenty of work for his backups, Marcedes Lewis and Clay Harbor, when the team employs multiple tight-end formations. The Jaguars are expected to use two and even three tight ends at various times.

Harbor told Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union he's looking forward to getting on the field more.

“This system is very exciting,” Harbor said. “It uses the tight ends a lot and it gives our (meeting) room more opportunities to make plays.”

Last season, the 27-year-old had 26 receptions for 289 yards and a touchdown, but his playing time dwindled severely as the season wore on, as O'Halloran points out. After missing the first three games of the year with a calf injury, Harbor played at least 50 snaps in his first seven games back. Over the last six games though, he played no more than 19 snaps and as few as six in one game.

More playing time is undoubtedly good news for Harbor, but first, he has to get healthy. Thus far, the six-year veteran has missed OTAs with another injury to the same calf he hurt last year. He told O'Halloran he hopes to be back in action when the Jaguars hold their minicamp June 16-18.
