Browns' Pettine says rookie CB Ekpre-Olomu likely to miss 2015 season

Browns rookie corner back Ifo Ekpre-Olomu will likely sit out his entire rookie season according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Pettine said the team's brass knew a redshirt season was likely for Ekpre-Olomu when they drafted him in the seventh round. The former Oregon Duck tore his ACL and dislocated his kneecap during practice in December. Before the injury he was a potential first-round pick.

"Players that have had this injury before, it's rare that you would return that season,'' Pettine said Wednesday, via the Northeast Ohio Media Group. "Given our depth, we're very comfortable with him sitting out. That's just one that we felt it was a low-risk, high-reward move when we took him in the seventh round. There's no reason to rush it back given the depth in that room now anyway."

After starting corners Joe Haden and Tramon Williams, the Browns have 2014 No. 1 pick Justin Gilbert, K'Waun Williams, and Pierre Desir.

Pettine also disclosed that another of the team's draft picks will also miss a considerable portion of the season. Sixth-round tight end Randall Telfer will miss training camp as he recovers from February surgery to repair a Lisfranc fracture. Telfer, who suffered the injury in USC's bowl win over Nebraska, will be re-evaluated midseason. Typical recovery time could last anywhere from four to eight months.
