Troy Aikman is 'dumbfounded' by Jerry Jones' recent Cowboys QB comments
Regardless of whether it’s warranted or not, there’s a quarterback controversy brewing in Dallas right now due to the recent struggles of Dak Prescott. Coach Jason Garrett has denied that the Cowboys have considered going to Tony Romo, but team owner Jerry Jones has left the door open with a couple of cryptic remarks.
“You’ll know it when you see it,” Jones said this week of whether they’ll make a change at quarterback.
Comments like that have to put a bit of pressure on the rookie QB, and undeservingly so. Jones' continued support for Romo in this situation has been questionable, and even former Cowboys quarterback and FOX broadcaster Troy Aikman is wondering what he’s doing.
"I'm just really dumbfounded by the comments, and not only the first time, but why they continue," Aikman said Thursday on 1310 The Ticket. "I don't understand why you would talk."
Aikman doesn’t think Jones is right for dismissing what Prescott has done thus far, including winning 11 of 13 games. Sure, Romo winning a Super Bowl with the Cowboys this year would be a great story, but Prescott becoming the first rookie quarterback to win a ring would be equally great.
"If Tony ends up getting in the game at some point, great," Aikman told The Ticket. "But to dismiss what a young rookie quarterback has done -- know what would be a great story would be if a rookie quarterback takes this team to a Super Bowl championship. That'd be a great story.”
But this is Prescott’s team now, and Jones has to support the rookie quarterback – now more than ever. He hasn’t exactly done that, and Aikman believes it’s because Jones wants Romo to play.
"I'm not sure that Tony, if it was left up to the owner, wouldn't be the starter now, just based on the comments that I've heard in the last couple weeks," Aikman said.
