Here's why the Browns still haven't cut Johnny Manziel

Published Mar. 9, 2016 5:56 p.m. ET

Everyone expected the Cleveland Browns to cut troubled quarterback Johnny Manziel as soon as the clock struck 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, the start of the NFL's new league year. But they didn't.

The Browns will reportedly hang on to Manziel for a few more days, with the hope that someone will offer them something for him. Cleveland is looking to get at least a late-round draft pick for the former Heisman Trophy winner, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

Manziel, the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 draft, is currently being investigated by Dallas police for an alleged domestic violence incident involving his ex-girlfriend, Collen Crowley, that took place in January. A grand jury will decide if Manziel will face charges for the incident.

The NFL is also conducting its own investigation and could decide to discipline Manziel for violating its personal conduct policy. If the league hands him a suspension, which many believe it will, the Browns could recoup some of his guaranteed bonus money, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Either way, the Browns have made it abundantly clear that Manziel is not a part of their future plans. But they aren't ready to chalk it up as a total loss just yet.

While it didn't happen as quickly as everyone predicted, it's only a matter of time until the Browns rid themselves of their Johnny Football headache.
