Johnathan Hankins cracks PFF's Top 101 list at No. 69 overall
New York Giants defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins had a breakout season in 2014. The second year pro may not make the NFL Network's Top 100 list, as voted on by the players, but he has caught the attention of a more analytical group of judges. The game charters and graders at Pro Football Focus, who break down every single play by every single player, have ranked Hankins as their 69th best player overall in 2014.
Here's how they broke it down.
Didn’t just replace Linval Joseph but acted as an improvement with his ability to contribute whatever the offense did. Initially there was a feeling he’d just be a run clogger but as the season went on delivered more and more pressure, with his ability to control blockers plain for all to see. 700 snaps might be the bar going forward for a guy who can impact every down.
Best Performance: Week 5, ATL @ NYG, +6.5
Key Stat: Had the eighth-most defensive stops against the run of all defensive tackles.
Hankins finished as PFF's seventh-best defensive tackle overall. Hankins graded out strongly against the run and pass. As the one-technique, or nose tackle, in the Giants' 4-3 defense, Hankins was typically stout against the run. Although the nature of his position dictated that Hankins often matched up with two offensive linemen, he generated a ton of pressure. Hankins finished with eight sacks, six quarterbacks hits, 21 quarterback pressures and three batted passes.
Entering his third season in the NFL, Hankins steps in as one of the Giants' core defensive players. With Antrel Rolle gone, there is also an opportunity for Hankins to emerge as a vocal leader who leads by his example on the field.
