Source: Giants tackle Will Beatty injured, will undergo surgery

Published May. 20, 2015 3:01 p.m. ET

New York Giants offensive tackle Will Beatty suffered a pectoral injury, a source told FOX Sports 1 NFL Insider Mike Garafolo.

Beatty apparently hurt himself while lifting weights and after being examined in New York on Wednesday afternoon, it was determined he will undergo surgery. He is expected to be out about six months.

Beatty is entering his seventh season in the NFL and is coming off back-to-back campaigns that saw him start all 16 games. The Giants could turn to either veteran Justin Pugh or rookie Ereck Flowers -- the No. 9 overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft -- to start at left tackle in Beatty's place.

Dr. Bradford Parsons, chief of shoulder surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, told the Associated Press the surgery will repair the tear but the player has to regain the flexibility in his shoulder and get strength back in the muscle.

"The bottom line is, the repair gives him a chance of getting his strength back, and if he gets his strength back, then he should be able to get back in action," Parsons said.

If Beatty were sidelined six months, he would miss the Giants' first 10 regular-season games, through the Patriots game on Nov. 15. The team has a bye the following week and resumes play on Nov. 29 against the Redskins.

Beatty, who is scheduled to make $5.5 million this season under a contract that runs through 2017, has started at left tackle for the Giants since the 2011 season.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
