Report: La'el Collins situation takes another tragic turn as baby dies

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 4:45 p.m. ET

The La'el Collins saga around the NFL Draft, already tragic, took a terribly sad turn Friday.

Brittney Mills, reportedly an ex-girlfriend of the LSU offensive tackle and draft prospect, was shot and killed April 24. The baby born after doctors were unable to save Mills died on Friday, Baton Rouge police told the Baton Rouge Advocate.

Collins has not been named as a suspect but police do want to speak with him. The Advocate reports that Collins is expected to meet with Baton Rouge police on Monday and at that time is expected to take a paternity test.

Collins was not selected in the first two days of the NFL Draft after being expected to go in the first round. FOX Sports 1 NFL insider Mike Garafolo reported Friday that Collins planned to not sign a contract with any team if selected in the final day of the draft and would will re-enter the 2016 NFL Draft. Per the report, Collins can only enter next year's draft if someone picks him and he doesn't sign. Should he not be selected, Collins would become a free agent.

Mills, 29, was shot to death when she answered the door to her apartment. Cpl. Don Coppola said police believe Mills, who also had a 10-year-old daughter, knew the shooter. There have been reports the shooting occurred because she refused to lend her car to the suspect.

No one has been arrested.
