Report: Rob Ryan was targeted in New Orleans robbery plot

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:21 p.m. ET

Last preseason, former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was the target in an alleged robbery plot that went awry due to an unlikely mistake.

According to a report from the New Orleans Advocate on Tuesday, Ryan was nearly the victim of a robbery during the team’s third preseason game. Only, one of the two men targeting Ryan dialed the wrong number and left a voicemail revealing their plan to break into the coach's house.

The voicemail, which was left on Aug. 30, 2015, was turned over to authorities by the social worker who received the call, which may have effectively saved Ryan from being robbed. A police officer was then stationed outside Ryan’s house after learning of the plot, which also allegedly involved holding up Ryan, though a grand jury declined to indict the two men on that count.

The man on the voicemail once again linked Ryan to Lil Wayne, which seems like a bizarre connection – and it is – but the link comes from their ties to New Orleans.

According to the Advocate, the two men, along with six others, were indicted for a string of robberies in 2015, though they were not charged for anything related to Ryan.

Ryan, of course, is now a defensive assistant in Buffalo with the Bills, working alongside his brother Rex once again.
