Michael Sam goes unclaimed on waivers

Rams defensive end Michael Sam went unclaimed on waivers, according to FOX Sports 1's Mike Garafolo. The deadline to put in any waiver requests was Sunday at noon ET.

Sam, who is currently a free agent, was released by the Rams on Saturday. He is now free to sign with any practice squad.

The first openly gay player drafted was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Despite being a longshot to make the team because of the Rams' defensive line depth, Sam survived two waves of cuts due to his solid play in preseason.

After learning of his release, Sam -- who was present at Missouri's season opener on Saturday -- took to Twitter:
