Report: Rams' cornerback E.J. Gaines' injury could be more serious

Published Aug. 7, 2015 3:47 p.m. ET

E.J. Gaines was expected to compete with Trumaine Johnson for the starting cornerback job opposite Janoris Jenkins in 2015.

Now that situation appears to be a little bit more cloudy. Gaines' reported injury he suffered on Sunday is thought to be more serious, according to Chris Trapasso.

Gaines' left Sunday's practice with what was though to be a leg injury. At the time, head coach Jeff Fisher could not comment on any details or specifics.

"We're going to have to do some tests," Fisher said, via ESPN. "He got stepped on, which is encouraging as opposed to the other things. So we'll do some tests. Right now, they are not too concerned. He's very sore but that typically can happen when you get stepped on."

If Gaines were to miss significant time, this could be a big blow to a Rams' secondary that had its ups and downs in 2014.
