Why 9 NFL teams won't be wearing Color Rush uniforms in 2016
On Tuesday, the NFL pulled back the curtain on Color Rush uniforms for all 32 teams, and they’re … colorful. The jerseys will be worn on Thursday night games this season, but as a result of the limited-use uniforms, not every team will be wearing them in 2016.
A total of nine teams won’t be wearing the alternate uniforms this season for a couple of reasons. Either their lone Thursday night game falls on Thanksgiving – which isn’t a part of the program in 2016 – or their opponent’s colors would cause colorblind issues.
Those teams playing on Thanksgiving that won’t get the chance to don Color Rush jerseys are the Colts, Redskins and Lions. They’ll have to wait until 2017.
Six other teams will also have to keep their colorful jerseys in the closet until next season because of color-clashing uniforms with their scheduled opponents. Instead, they’ll wear all-white jerseys and pants to avoid any problems for colorblind viewers.
Here are those teams:
New York Jets
Houston Texans
Arizona Cardinals
Atlanta Falcons
Cleveland Browns
Los Angeles Rams
According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, the NFL made a concerted effort to take colorblind fans into consideration after last season’s debacle when the all-green Jets took on the all-red Bills. Nike even brought in doctors from Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York to give their thoughts on the effects these jerseys might have for those with colorblindness.
The NFL will still sell the colorful jerseys for all 32 teams despite the fact that not all of them will be worn in 2016. They figure to make a whole bunch of money, which is a good thing for everyone in the end.
All proceeds from the sale of Color Rush jerseys will benefit the NFL Foundation, which funds health, safety and wellness for youth football players. So go out and buy those colorful jerseys because all that money is going to a good cause.
