Bayern Munich lure Dirk Nowitzki with advisor role after NBA career

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:35 p.m. ET

Bayern Munich’s old and soon-to-be new president Uli Hoeness wants Dirk Nowitzki to join the club as an advisor once his NBA career is over.

No, Nowitzki won’t be giving Philipp Lahm & Co. any tips on soccer, no matter how skilled Dirk may be with his feet…

The offer applies for Bayern’s basketball team, of course, which Hoeness aims to make into as dominant a force in Germany as its soccer team has been for decades. Nowitzki has been a lifelong supporter of Bayern, and at 38 years old is going into his 19th season with the Dallas Mavericks.

"If Dirk is looking for a role as an advisor after his playing career is over, then he would be warmly welcomed," Hoeness told Bild, while ruling out Nowitzki lacing it up for Bayern’s hoop stars.

"We still couldn't afford him even if we used the entire €10m team budget," Hoeness quipped.

Hoeness has been thinking big when it comes to FCB's basketball side, and an exhibition match in the Allianz Arena one day is another dream of his.

“Maybe one day, when we have a really good team, we can stage a great game in the Allianz Arena, in front of 60,000 or 70,000 people. Maybe against the Chicago Bulls or whoever,” Hoeness said. “But before that we still have to get a little bit better.”

After gaining promotion to Germany’s top division in 2011, Bayern’s basketball team won their first national championship in 2014 but have yet to make a splash in the Euroleague, basketball’s version of the UEFA Champions League.

Maybe with some help from Nowitzki, Bayern can start to dominate there as well.
