Texas Football: Tom Herman Gets First Commitment for 2017 Class

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 11:28 p.m. ET

Texas has officially signed a kicker to be part of their 2017 recruiting class, the first player to commit for Tom Herman.

Tom Herman had plenty of work to do at Texas when taking over for Charlie Strong in late November. It started with transitioning away from Houston and heading to Austin to develop the 2017 recruiting class. He inherited a handful of players from Strong’s incoming class, including defensive lineman Lagaryonn Carson, quarterback Sam Ehlinger, defensive back Montrell Estell, defensive lineman Taquon Graham, and receiver Damion Miller.

Well, Herman has officially added to this group with his first-ever commit for the Longhorns. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College kicker Joshua Rowland signed his national letter of intent on on Wednesday to join, according to the Sun Herald. This had been the first day where schools were able to sign junior college players.

Rowland would comment on the signing in the same Sun Herald piece as well:

“It was a whirlwind of emotions,” he said of the recruiting experience. “I probably made it more stressful than I needed it to be. Being a kicker, all these bigger schools came in late. I’m glad I waited and held out for the right school.”

Adding Rowland gives Texas the No. 64 recruiting class in the nation, according to 247 Sports. He’s considered a two-star player and the No. 2 JUCO kicker in the 2017 class. This transfer player may replace outgoing senior kicker Trent Domingue, who hit 15 of 22 field goals in the 2016 season.

This should be the beginning of a busy winter for Herman before heading into spring practices in 2017. According to 247 Sports, there are still a handful of potential players that could commit to the former Houston coach, including running back Eno Benjamin, a four-star recruit from Wylie, TX. Could he be the next one to join Rowland and the Longhorns for 2017?
