Dana White reveals options for Conor McGregor after beating Nate Diaz
Conor McGregor exacted revenge on Nate Diaz with a majority decision victory to cap off UFC 202 while also tying up their series of fights at one win a piece.
Diaz submitted McGregor with a second round rear naked choke back in March and the rematch was set up five months later with the two fighters putting on a battle that will likely be remembered for years to come.
Despite the rivalry and the epic war that took place Saturday night, UFC president Dana White quickly shot down the idea of a trilogy between McGregor and Diaz taking place any time in the near future.
Instead, White says McGregor has to go down to featherweight to defend his title against interim champion Jose Aldo or get stripped of the belt all together.
"We're definitely not doing this a third time right now," White told FOX Sports after UFC 202 wrapped.
In a separate interview with TMZ after the show, White said that McGregor will also have the option to move down to lightweight to face current champion Eddie Alvarez if he wants that fight instead.
Unfortunately, McGregor facing Alvarez would also result in him giving up the featherweight title with Aldo then being named the undisputed champion at 145 pounds.
McGregor stated on Saturday night that he doesn't buy the UFC stripping him of the belt to hand it to Aldo after he crushed the Brazilian with a stunning 13-second knockout last December.
"I don't think they'll do that. How can they do that? If they want to give my belt to the guy I KO'd in 13 seconds and bury that division in the prelims or the Fight Pass stuff cause that's what they're going to do," McGregor said.
"We'll see. How can they do that? What would that do to the division if the guy I KO'd in 13 seconds is the unified champion so we've got a lot to talk about."
McGregor has already hinted at another opportunity outside the Octagon — possibly referencing the long rumored boxing match with Floyd Mayweather perhaps — but it seems he's resigned to fight someone other than Aldo next.
For now, it remains to be seen what McGregor will do next but he will undoubtedly enter into negotiations with the UFC in the near future to determine his next fight.
