Dana White says there are 'no guarantees' Floyd Mayweather beats Conor McGregor

The proposed super fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather will undoubtedly go down as one of the most profitable matchups in combat sports history despite the odds in the bout being extremely lopsided.

Ever since the fight was first rumored to take place a year ago, oddsmakers have been theorizing on the stakes for the bout that would pit one of the best boxers of all time against the biggest superstar in UFC history.

With a 49-0 professional record, Mayweather has been placed at nearly a 25-to-1 favorite by most sports books, which means a McGregor victory would easily be considered the most improbable upset since Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson in 1990 (at that time Douglas was a 42-1 underdog to Tyson).

UFC president Dana White cautions against the idea that Mayweather would be a lock to defeat McGregor despite the obvious odds on his side.

"Great thing about fights is you never know who's going to win," White said in a recent interview with X17. "Believe me, there's a lot of weekends we put on fights and I think people aren't going to win and they do. It's the crazy thing about the fight business. I mean if it was guaranteed that Floyd was going to win this fight, why would you pay for it?

"There's no guarantees."

While Mayweather has infinitely more boxing experience than McGregor combined with a professional career stretching back more than a decade, White says there are still areas where the Irishman could take advantage in this boxing match.

While the two sides haven't even agreed on a weight for the fight, McGregor will have a significant size advantage against Mayweather with a longer reach as well.

Add to that, McGregor has shown serious knockout power throughout his UFC career while Mayweather only had one KO in his final 10 fights and that came against Victor Ortiz in controversial fashion after a restart from a foul.

"Conor's 27, Floyd's 40. Conor's the bigger, stronger guy. He's got knockout power," White said. "It's an interesting fight."

Negotiations for the fight are ongoing although sources have told FOX Sports that a targeted date in September is currently in the works for the Mayweather vs. McGregor showdown if the two sides can come to an agreement.

White still believes the fight is going to happen but he can't say for certain when it will be based on the two sides still working towards a split on profits from what will likely be a massive pay-per-view.

"Probably not for a while but I believe it will happen," White said about the timing for the fight. "There's too much money involved to not happen."
