San Diego State runs for 287 yards, 3 TDs in win over UNLV

CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Greg Bell had 19 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown, Chance Bell scored on runs of 5 and 19 yards, and San Diego State beat UNLV 34-6 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

San Diego State had 424 total yards, including 287 rushing. The Aztecs limited UNLV, which converted 1-of-15 third downs, and had 14 tackles for loss including five sacks.

Kaegun Williams ran for 84 yards on 10 carries for San Diego State and Chance Bell finished with seven carries for 40 yards.

Charles Williams had 20 carries for 80 yards for the Runnin' Rebels. Max Gilliam was 13-of-21 passing for 105 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown pass to Steve Jenkins that made it 27-6 midway through the third quarter.

The Aztecs are playing their 2020 and 2021 home games at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif., while the University builds its future stadium in Mission Valley in the footprint of SDCCU Stadium, which is located 113 miles from the University’s previous home stadium.

It was the latest season opener for San Diego State in program history and marks the first time the Aztecs have opened a campaign in October since 1949.

It marked the return of Brady Hoke as SDSU head coach and was Marcus Arroyo's first game at the helm for the Rebels. Hoke, who served as the defensive line coach last season, was the Aztecs’ head coach from 2009-10, posting a 9-4 record and a Poinsettia Bowl championship in 2010. Arroyo was hired by UNLV in December after helping Oregon win the Pac-12 Championship (and then Rose Bowl) as offensive coordinator.
