Campillo takes 3-shot lead on opening day of Dutch Open
CROMVOIRT, Netherlands (AP) — Jorge Campillo birdied his way to 9-under 63 on Thursday for a three-shot lead after the opening round of the Dutch Open on the European Tour.
Campillo, who started on the 10th tee, carded four straight birdies from the 11th and added three more before his only bogey on the second hole. The Spanish player added another birdie on the sixth at Bernardus Golf before finishing with two more for 10 altogether.
“I hit it great, hit the driver fairly well, missed a few fairways here and there but hit great iron shots and only made one bogey,” Campillo said. “I keep doing the same things. I’m hitting my irons really well, the driver is a little inconsistent but on this golf course, it lets you play from off the fairway as well. I putted great today, which I didn’t do in Belgium, so it was a nice day.”
Andy Sullivan, Joël Stalter and Pablo Larrazábal were joint second after their rounds of 66.
Home favorite Joost Luiten was among a group of seven players a further shot back.
“I think they found out I was playing decent so they came out and supported, which is great,” the Dutch player said. “I was struggling with golf and you just need to start changing things. It’s hard when you’re not playing well but I think even when you don’t play well you can have the correct mindset. That’s what I focused on.”
