Jamie Donaldson setting pace at the Cyprus Showdown
PAPHOS, Cyprus (AP) — The 32-player field for the third round of the Cyprus Showdown will be determined on Saturday after play was suspended because of darkness on the second day of the European Tour event.
Jamie Donaldson, the 2014 Ryder Cup star who held the 54-hole lead at the Cyprus Open on the same course last week, was the leading scorer on Friday on 12 under par with three holes to play. The Welshman was 7 under for his second round and was one of 30 players still to finish.
James Morrison (63) of England and Johannes Veerman (64) of the United States set the clubhouse target of 11 under par at Aphrodite Hills Resort.
Play was suspended for more than an hour and a half early in the afternoon because of thunderstorms. After the restart, darkness halted play.
In a first-of-its-kind format on the European Tour, the top 32 players and ties after the second round will advance to the third day of play. All scores will be reset, and the top 16 and ties after the third round will go through to Sunday.
Each player will again start from even par in the final-round shootout.
