Jets activate WR Smith from IR, add 3 from practice squad
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets activated wide receiver Jeff Smith from injured reserve and added three players from the practice squad ahead of the team's game against the Denver Broncos.
Defensive back Javelin Guidry was signed to the active roster Thursday, and wide receiver Lawrence Cager and defensive back Lamar Jackson were elevated from the practice squad.
New York also released quarterback Mike White and cornerback Nate Hairston to make room on the active roster. White had served as Sam Darnold's backup the first three games. His departure means veteran Joe Flacco has fully recovered from offseason neck surgery and will likely be the No. 2 quarterback against the team for which he played last season.
The additions of Smith and Cager help boost a banged-up receiving group. Breshad Perriman is out with an ankle injury, and Jamison Crowder (hamstring) and Chris Hogan (ribs/knee) were listed as questionable for the game.
Smith spent most of last season on New York's practice squad and was having a solid training camp before injuring a shoulder. Cager, an undrafted rookie out of Georgia, made his NFL debut at Indianapolis last Sunday and had two catches for 35 yards.
Guidry was signed in May as an undrafted free agent out of Utah. Jackson was also added as an undrafted free agent from Nebraska.
Hairston spent the past two seasons with the Jets after being acquired from Indianapolis in August 2019 for a conditional sixth-round pick. He played in 11 games last season and two this year.
