Getafe and Real Betis score 12 goals each in huge wins over sixth-division clubs in Copa del Rey

MADRID (AP) — Getafe and Real Betis both scored 12 goals against lower-division clubs in the first round of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.

Getafe routed sixth-tier Tardienta 12-0, with Mason Greenwood scoring a goal in each half and Óscar Rodríguez getting a hat trick.

Betis trounced sixth-tier Hernan Cortes 12-1, with Willian José finding the net four times and Rodri Sánchez scoring a hat trick.

Girona, which shares the lead of the Spanish league with Real Madrid, had a much harder time against fourth-tier club San Roque de Lepe, winning 2-1 with a goal by Sávio deep into second-half stoppage time.

Cadiz went to a penalty shootout against fourth-tier side Badalona Futur, prevailing 4-2 after a 0-0 draw.

Fifth-place Real Sociedad needed a second-half goal by Carlos Fernández to defeat sixth-tier Buñol.

A total of 41 first-round matches were played throughout Wednesday, a holiday in Spain.

Sevilla beat sixth-tier Quintanar 3-0, while Athletic Bilbao overcame sixth-tier Rubi 2-1 with a pair of goals by Adu Ares. Mallorca defeated Boiro 4-0, which was the same score for Celta Vigo's win over Turegano. Rayo Vallecano routed Atletico de Lugones 6-0, with Radamel Falcao scoring twice.

The first round is played in single elimination games at the home of the lower-division teams.
