MATCHDAY: Man United, Liverpool meet in heavyweight EPL game
A look at what’s happening in European soccer on Monday:
ENGLAND
Manchester United hosts Liverpool for what is historically the biggest game in English soccer. Except, for this particular fixture, there's a catch. Both teams currently sit in the bottom six of the Premier League, which is a massive surprise even if it is very early in the season. United has lost both of its games, 2-1 to Brighton and 4-0 to Brentford. Liverpool has drawn both of its games, to Fulham 2-2 and to Crystal Palace 1-1. Liverpool beat United 4-0 and 5-0 last season and heads to Old Trafford as the big favorite given United's woeful display against Brentford that piled the pressure on new manager Erik ten Hag.
SPAIN
The Spanish league continues with two matches between teams looking to earn their first points of the season. Elche hosts promoted Almería, which lost to Real Madrid in its opening match despite taking an early lead against the defending champion. Girona will try to rebound from its loss at Valencia when it hosts Getafe, which fell at home against Atlético Madrid.
ITALY
Injury-hit Juventus visits Sampdoria in one of two Serie A games. Juve has won its last six matches against Sampdoria in the league and another victory would make it a record streak of consecutive successes against the Blucerchiati in the competition. But Juventus will be without Paul Pogba and Angel Di Maria among others. Leonardo Bonucci will travel but coach Massimiliano Allegri said he wants to rest the veteran defender. Allegri said Moise Kean, Adrien Rabiot and new signing Filip Kostić will all play. The Bianconeri began their league campaign with a 3-0 victory against Sassuolo. Roma hosts newly promoted Cremonese.
