MATCHDAY: PSV-Rangers in Champions League qualifying and Chelsea plays in English League Cup
A look at what’s happening in European soccer on Wednesday:
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFYING
The last three entries in the 32-team Champions League group stage will be decided. European veterans PSV Eindhoven and Rangers meet after a 2-2 draw in Scotland last week in the first leg of their qualifying playoff. Royal Antwerp goes to Greece with a 1-0 lead over AEK Athens from what was the Belgian champion’s first game in the competition since 1957. Copenhagen hosts competition debutant Raków Częstochowa after a 1-0 win in the away leg in Poland. Winners advance to the group-stage draw Thursday with guaranteed prize money of about 18 million euros ($19.4 million) from UEFA, plus results bonuses. Losers go to the second-tier Europa League group stage with about 9 million euros ($9.7 million) guaranteed and less lucrative bonuses.
ENGLAND
The second round of English League Cup wraps up with five remaining games, including Chelsea hosting fourth-tier AFC Wimbledon and an all-Premier League match between Nottingham Forest and Burnley. Everton visits fourth-tier Doncaster following three straight losses to open the Premier League, without even scoring a goal.
