Newcastle buys England U21 player Livramento from Southampton. Spurs gets Van de Ven from Wolfsburg
LONDON (AP) — Young defenders Tino Livramento and Micky van de Ven made the headline big-money transfers in the English Premier League on Tuesday.
Newcastle bought England under-21 defender Livramento from Southampton for a fee reported to be at least 30 million pounds ($38 million).
The Saudi Arabia-owned club, which returns to the Champions League next month, said the 20-year-old Livramento signed a five-year contract.
Tottenham reportedly paid an initial 34 million pounds ($43 million) to Wolfsburg for Van de Ven, a Netherlands U21 center back.
The 22-year-old's move on a six-year deal is still subject to approval for a work permit, Tottenham said.
Livramento pointed to the attraction of being mentored at Newcastle by Kieran Trippier, the veteran England right back who played in the 2019 Champions League final for Tottenham.
“Hopefully he teaches me how to become a better player and a better full back,” Livramento said in a statement on the Newcastle website.
The price for Livramento has risen fivefold since he left Chelsea for Southampton two years ago.
In an impressive first full season in the Premier League, Livramento suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out for almost a year. Livramento returned toward the end of last season that ended in relegation for Southampton.
Van de Ven spent two years in the Bundesliga, including captaining Wolfsburg in some games, after joining from Volendam. He was in the Dutch preliminary squad for the 2022 World Cup but did not make the final selection by coach Louis van Gaal.
Tottenham, which lost the Champions League final to Liverpool four years ago, is without European competition for the first time in 14 seasons after placing eighth in the Premier League.
