Impact Felton struggled to find his rhythm from field, but made up for it with several hustle plays. The sophomore guard is playing in a much larger role after appearing primarily off the bench last season. Felton's strong defense will help to solidify his role as a starter this season.

Impact Small played in just nine games a season ago, but was very impressive in this one to help the Pirates scathe off defeat from Mercer. Small and Brandon Johnson combined for 47 points in this one and both players appear to be taking a big next step as sophomores. ECU will host Presbyterian on Saturday.

Impact Johnson and teammate Javon Small combined to score 47 points in this one as East Carolin was barely able to outlast Mercer. Johnson appears right on track to take the next step as a player this season. His freshman campaign saw the 6-8 forward start five games and average 4.7 points and 5.1 rebounds in 17.4 minutes per contest. The outside shot could be a new weapon, as Johnson shot just 21 percent from out there last season but looked very solid in the opener.
