Struggles at Arkansas Card went 8-of-15 passing for 61 yards while rushing for 13 yards on eight carries with a lost fumble in Saturday's 40-21 loss at Arkansas.

Impact Card's start against Arkansas was the polar opposite of his start against Louisiana as there were no good feelings when he was pulled in favor of Casey Thompson late in the third quarter. Thompson would go on to lead two successful scoring drives which ended in rushing scores for himself. It will be interesting to see who receives the start when Texas hosts Rice next week.

Impact It appears coach Steve Sarkisian is trying to keep both quarterbacks involved at this point, but Sark mentioned before Week 1 that he did intend to move to a single quarterback at some point. It doesn't appear that will be completely the case Saturday, though Card still saw the vast majority of reps under center in the opener.

Impressive in first start Card completed 14 of 21 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns while also notching a rushing score in Saturday's 38-18 win over Louisiana.

Impact Card did everything right in his first start as the redshirt freshman did not make any mistakes and the coaching staff were able to take him out of the game because Texas had such a comfortable lead. Card looked comfortable throwing the ball and provided a glimpse of what he can do as a dual-threat quarterback. Casey Thompson did enter the game in the third quarter and threw a touchdown on just four passes. Unless Card has a setback against Arkansas next week, he appears to be the quarterback of the future at Texas.

Impact This isn't necessarily shocking that the coaching staff would give their young signal caller a short leash. They have another solid option in Casey Thompson waiting on the bench if an adjustment needs to be made. It will be a good test for Card against a ranked UL-Lafayette squad.

Impact In practices that have been open to the media over the past week, Card has been spotted taking the vast majority of the first-team reps ahead of Casey Thompson, so it comes as little surprise that the redshirt freshman from Austin is in the lead in the quarterback competition. Card saw only limited reps behind longtime starter Sam Ehlinger in 2020, appearing in two games while completing one of his three pass attempts for five yards and four times for 11 yards.
