Impact Thomas is clearly a guy who UTEP's coaches want touching the ball. He's got 31 catches already, and now he has eight carries as well. Thomas also returns kicks and punts. Opportunity is always a big part of success, but fantasy-minded folks will want to see more production.

Ezell Jolly - Rushes for TD Jolly ran 17 times for 76 yards and a touchdown against Sam Houston on Thursday, but he lost a fumble.
Impact As a freshman last season, Jolly was limited to four games due to injury. He was "healthy" to start this season, but played one snap in the opener and then did not see the field again until this game. Well, now healthy, Jolly comfortably got the most carries of any UTEP back.

Cade McConnell - Doesn't surge into starting role McConnell went 15-for-28 for 204 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against Sam Houston on Thursday. He also lost a fumble.
Impact McConnell, who started late last season for the Miners, lost his gig when new head coach Scotty Walden opted for his own recruit Skyler Locklear. Locklear didn't cut it, and McConnell played well in relief last time around, so he got the start here. It was not a remarkable day, and it is a concern that he's already fumbled three times this season.

Cade McConnell - Promoted to starting role McConnell has been named the starter for Thursday's game against Sam Houston, Adrian Broaddus of 600 ESPN El Paso reports.
Impact The redshirt junior looked impressive against Colorado State after throwing two touchdown passes in relief, and he looks poised to recover the starting role over Skyler Locklear. McConnell was a starter in the second half of the 2023 season as well, though he only completed 53.5 percent of his passes while posting a less-than-inspiring 6:4 TD:INT across seven appearances.

Skyler Locklear - Benched in favor of Cade McConnell Locklear has been replaced as the Miners' starting quarterback by Cade McConnell, Adrian Broaddus of 600 ESPN El Paso reports.
Impact Locklear has struggled this season, tossing for 710 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions through three and a half games. He was replaced by McConnell at halftime last week, and he may have just lost the job indefinitely. Before getting benched against Colorado State, he was 7-of-15 for 56 yards and an interception. He'll now ride the bench for the Miners for the foreseeable future.

Impact Thomas is the style of receiver that is valuable to his team, but brings less to the fantasy space. He has 26 catches through four games, which is quite good, but he's a release-valve receiver, not a big-play threat. Thomas has turned those 26 catches into 284 yards, and he has only found the end zone once.

Impact What's notable is that both of Odom's touchdowns came after Skyler Locklear was replaced at quarterback by Cade McConnell. Thus, it doesn't seem like a change under center will cramp his style. After doing nothing in UTEP's opener, Odom has 189 yards and three touchdowns over his last three games.

Impact Unfortunately for UTEP, it seems like the "What if we just port over the Austin Peay offense?" experiment is not working out. Jackson is a prime example of that. He ran for 1,373 yards and 10 touchdowns at the FCS level in 2023. This year, he's tallied 214 yards and zero rushing scores through four games.

Cade McConnell - Throws two TDs in relief McConnell replaced a struggling Skyler Locklear against Colorado State on Saturday. He went 19-for-29 for 220 yards and two touchdowns.
Impact It's understandable why Scotty Walden gave Locklear, one of his recruits at Austin Peay, the first shot with UTEP. However, Locklear had never started at the FCS level, much less the FBS level. McConnell was UTEP's starter the second half of last season, and he seems primed to step back into that role, either now or later.

Impact Locklear was a Scotty Walden recruit at Austin Peay, and followed him head coach to UTEP. He was given the first shot to start for the revamped Miners, but on the year he has 710 passing yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions. McConnell took over as UTEP's starter last season. Maybe he's a steadier hand for the team.
