SECOND HALF
Both teams started the second half off hot, but the Badgers kept chipping away at the Cougars' lead, eventually getting within four points twice.
First, they did it on a 3-pointer from Max Klesmit. And they did it again with 13 minutes left thanks to three free throws from John Tonje. BYU, however, had an answer each time.
The Cougars built their lead back up, sitting around a 10-point lead until the under-four-minute timeout. But some trouble emerged for BYU when Dawson Baker committed a Flagrant 2, giving Wisconsin two free throws to cut the lead to 86-78 with 3:11 left.
BYU went back up 11 on the ensuing possession, but Wisconsin hung in there and took advantage of the Cougars' gaffes. After BYU made a pair of free throws to take a 91-83 lead with 1:25 remaining, Wisconsin went on a 6-0 run in a 25-second span. Tonje made a 3-pointer to cut BYU's lead to five before the Cougars committed a foul on the ensuing inbounds. Tonje converted a quick and-1 to make it 91-89 with a minute left.
BYU secured an offensive rebound on the next possession but couldn't score, giving Wisconsin the ball with a chance to tie or win the game with 13 seconds left. Tonje got an isolation, driving to the bucket before trying to shoot a step back. His shot was off the mark, though, giving BYU the victory.
FIRST HALF
BYU was strong on both ends in the first half, shooting 47.2% from the field while making 6 of 14 3-pointers while holding Wisconsin to 38.7% shooting from the field and 5-of-17 shooting from distance.
Each team showed off its shooting from distance during a four-possession stretch, though, in the first half as both teams traded 3-pointers.
But BYU was just a bit more crisp than Wisconsin. Trevin Knell drained an impressive 3-pointer right before the buzzer that gave the Cougars a 47-36 lead.
