Michigan vs. No. 2 Ohio State highlights: Teams scuffle after Wolverines stun Buckeyes
Week 14 of the college football season featured an epic Big Ten showdown between No. 2 Ohio State and Michigan on FOX's "Big Noon Kickoff," marking the 120th edition of "The Game."
The Buckeyes entered the game as huge favorites at 10-1, while the Wolverines were 6-5. But Michigan pulled off a stunner, beating Ohio State, 13-10, after a late fourth quarter field goal. It was Michigan's fourth straight win over their rivals and knocked the Buckeyes out of contention for the Big Ten championship game.
Here are the highlights from Columbus!
Wolverines win, 13-10; fight breaks out after final whistle
FINAL: Michigan 13, Ohio State 10
After the game, a fight broke out in the middle of the field when a Michigan player tried to plant a Wolverines flag on the "O" at the center of the field.
Multiple players were seen getting in on the action, which went on for a few minutes, while Buckeyes' coach Ryan Day was seen looking on with concern.
The players were eventually cleared out, and FOX Sports' Jenny Taft caught up with Michigan star Kalel Mullings, who condemned the fighting and called it "classless."
"We had four quarters to do all that fighting," Mullings told Taft. "It's wrong. It's bad for the game. Classless, in my opinion. People have to be better."
It's good!
4Q: 00:45 - Michigan 13, Ohio State 10
After a whirlwind of a fourth quarter, Michigan was able to get down the field and tack on three points with a field goal, taking the lead with less than a minute left in the game.
A monster run from Kalel Mullings set his team up for the score.
Intercepted at the goal line!
4Q: 7:40 - Michigan 10, Wolverines 10
The back-and-forth turnovers continued with another interception by the Ohio State defense.
Michael Cohen: Third quarter analysis
Fifteen more minutes down, but no movement on the scoreboard here at Ohio Stadium, where field position and turnovers defined a third quarter that ended in a stalemate. A promising opening possession from the Buckeyes flipped the field position in their favor, pinning the Wolverines at the 2-yard line and leaving the visitors with a long field and longer odds because of the wind. It was the first of three consecutive Michigan drives that failed to gain more than 6 yards each as the running game stalled and quarterback Davis Warren looked uncomfortable against the Ohio State pass rush. Warren's lone connection of the quarter came on a third-down slant to tight end Marlin Klein in the waning seconds. He finished the quarter with as many interceptions (one) as completions (one).
But even with the gift of a short field — Warren's pass was intercepted by Caleb Downs at the Michigan 16-yard line — the Buckeyes were unable to take the lead thanks to another missed field goal from kicker Jayden Fielding, his second of the game. It was Ohio State's second special teams gaffe of the half after kick returner TreVeyon Henderson misjudged the second-half kickoff and pinned his team deep in its own territory. That Fielding's miss came on the heels of a second interception from Howard, who threw well behind intended target Emeka Egbuka, only compounded the angst and frustration inside Ohio Stadium as the prospect of a fourth-straight loss to Michigan loomed.
'He hooked it'
3Q: 1:58 - Michigan 10, Ohio State 10
It was not Jayden Fielding's day in Columbus as he missed another field goal late in the third quarter that could have put the Buckeyes in the lead.
Took it right back!
3Q: 4:01 - Michigan 10, Ohio State 10
The Ohio State defense was able to snatch one right out of the air from Michigan's Davis Warren to give the Buckeyes the ball back.
Another interception!
3Q: 4:51 - Michigan 10, Ohio State 10
The Wolverines defense picked off Ohio State QB Will Howard late in the third quarter, handing him his second interception of the game.
Michael Cohen: Second quarter analysis
The second quarter here at Ohio Stadium was an ideal summation of why these kinds of rivalry games — Ohio State vs. Michigan; Auburn vs. Alabama; Texas vs. Oklahoma — are so enthralling for fans of college football. Consider the swings of momentum and emotion that washed over fans of the Buckeyes and Wolverines, respectively, across 15 minutes of game time alone:
The quarter opened with a goal-line stand from the Buckeyes, who rebuffed Michigan on 4th and 1 at the 3-yard line in a display of force that surely pleased head coach Ryan Day ... which led to an immediate interception from quarterback Will Howard on a poorly thrown ball to Carnell Tate along the sideline ... which led to a short rushing touchdown for Kalel Mullings that gave Michigan a 7-3 lead ... which suddenly felt far larger when Howard absorbed a huge hit from safety Makari Paige and left the game due to injury ... which ended with a collective sigh of relief from the home crowd as Howard exited the medical tent, jogged up and down the sideline and then returned to the game later on the same drive ... which culminated in a disappointing missed field goal for the Buckeyes in a continuation of special teams issues that have now spanned several seasons ... which was exacerbated by an incredible 54-yard field goal from Michigan kicker Dominic Zvada that extended his team's lead to 10-3 .... which only lasted for two minutes and change before freshman sensation Jeremiah Smith bowled over cornerback Zeke Berry and hauled in a 10-yard touchdown with :30 remaining in the half.
All of which meant that after 30 minutes here in Columbus, the Wolverines and Buckeyes entered the locker room tied at 10-10 in what is shaping up to be another classic edition of the sport's most hotly contested rivalry. Buckle up and enjoy.
Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith to the end zone!
2Q: 00:32 - Michigan 10, Ohio State 10
Ohio State wideout Jeremiah Smith ran over a defender on his way to the end zone, and was wide open for a TD catch from Will Howard, which knotted things up in Columbus right before the half.
All eyes on the kickers!
2Q: 2:17 - Michigan 10, Ohio State 3
The kicking unit for Ohio State had a few missteps in the second quarter with a missed 38-yard field goal from kicker Jayden Fielding, and a shallow 31-yard punt from Joe McGuire that placed the Wolverines at the 39-yard line.
Michigan kicker Dominic Zvada had no struggles on his 54-yard field goal, which gave the Wolverines a seven-point lead late in the second quarter.
Interception sets the Wolverines up for their first score
2Q: 12:41 - Michigan 7, Ohio State 3
Michigan DB Aamir Hall picked off Ohio State quarterback Will Howard to put his team back in scoring position at the 2-yard line after a disappointing fourth down stop just a few plays earlier.
Running back Kalel Mullings capitalized on the turnover, taking the ball into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown which gave the Wolverines their first lead of the day.
Stuffed on fourth-and-1
2Q: 14:51 - Ohio State 3, Michigan 0
The Ohio State defense came up with a huge stop after the Wolverines decided to go for it on fourth down.
Michael Cohen: First quarter analysis
Saturday's game began in exactly the fashion most people expected given the respective strengths and weaknesses of Michigan and No. 2 Ohio State. The former received the opening kickoff and immediately handed the ball to tailback Kalel Mullings on consecutive plays, probing the Buckeyes' run defense after it cratered in this matchup each of the last three years. And when it came time for quarterback Davis Warren to throw, an early completion to move the chains gave way to a failed third-down pass to second-string tight end Marlin Klein, in for the injured Colston Loveland (head).
The Buckeyes, meanwhile, wasted little time in testing a Michigan secondary that lost starting safety Rod Moore to a torn ACL before the season began and has played more than a month without All-American cornerback Will Johnson, who was absent again this weekend. Quarterback Will Howard connected with wideout Carnell Tate three times on the opening possession alone to test the middle of the Wolverines' zone defense. Those completions moved Ohio State into position for a 29-yard field goal that opened the scoring.
