2024 MLB All-Star Game highlights: Shohei Ohtani homers but AL rallies to beat NL 5-3

Jarren Duran has been a superstar for the Boston Red Sox in his first full season at the major league level, slapping 10 HR and 41 RBI so far as Boston's leadoff hitter. And now, he can add All-Star MVP to his résumé for what's becoming an unforgettable campaign for the young slugger. 

The 27-year-old earned his first career All-Star nod amid a season in which he is hitting for a .284 average, .820 OPS, an AL-leading 27 doubles and an MLB-leading 10 triples. Duran entered the game with +4000 odds to win All-Star game MVP.

FINAL: American League 5, National League 3

Following up on an electric 2022 All-Star debut, Emmanuel Clase closed the curtain on the NL as he fanned Bryan Reynolds on his signature 100 mph fastball to record the save and seal the 5-3 AL win.

Cristopher Sánchez's night was just about easy as easy can get. The Phillies pitcher got two outs on just two pitches before getting the hook from manager Torey Lovullo, and returning to spectator mode. Talk about a light load!

The American League took a 5-3 lead courtesy of a big two-out rally. Baltimore Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander kicked off his first All-Star game with a bang, slapping a single to right field. 

Then, Boston Red Sox slugger Jarren Duran continued his breakout season with a two-run home run, smashing Hunter Greene's splitter over the right field wall to give the AL its first lead of the game.

T5: National League 3, American League 3

Athletics pitcher Mason Miller didn't look like a rookie in his fifth-inning stint, and his opponents didn't look like All-Stars as he sent them back to the dugout in order with an impressive outing. 

The flamethrowing rookie, who has thrown 286 pitches at 100 miles per hour or faster (by far the most in MLB), got Ketel Marte to bite on his first pitch, sending a routine fly ball to left field. 

Then, he nearly sent Shohei Ohtani to his knees after whizzing a pair of 100 mph-plus heaters past him before freezing him with a nasty slider. Miller, who topped out at 103.6 mph during the appearance — the fastest pitch in the pitch-tracking era of MLB history, per the league — struck out Trea Turner with another dazzling slide to complete the 1-2-3 inning.

B3: National League 3, American League 3

Juan Soto came up with runners on second and third and the Yankees superstar plated both runners, coming up clutch for the AL with a powerful single up the middle.

Soto then came around to score on a single from the Cleveland Guardians' David Fry to tie the game off San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb. 

T3: National League 3, American League 0

After walking in his first at-bat, Shohei Ohtani took a trot around the bases when he mashed a mammoth 400-foot home run to vault the NL ahead, 3-0. 

Ohtani's first All-Star Game home run was hit with so much power that right fielder Juan Soto didn’t even move. 

The superstar's blast marks the first All-Star Game home run by a Los Angeles Dodger since Mike Piazza in 1996 and only second ever by a Japanese player, joining Ichiro Suzuki's famous inside-the-parker in 2007.

Trea Turner is more known for his offense than defense, but the rangy shortstop earned himself a web gem as he laid out to record the second out of the inning on what could have been a game-changing liner from Vladmir Guerrero Jr. Turner got a much easier grounder on the next at-bat of the inning, and handled it with ease to take the game into the third.

B1: National League 0, American League 0

In typical Paul Skenes fashion, the Pirates rookie phenom was throwing gas to open his first All-Star start. He forced Steven Kwan into an infield fly and showed off his leather on a short chopper back to the mound from Gunnar Henderson as his fastball touched 100 mph multiple times.

Juan Soto's famous plate discipline propelled him to a two-out walk, but Skenes escaped with a clean inning after Soto's fellow Yankees star Aaron Judge's powerful hack on the first pitch he saw resulted in a harmless ground ball.

T1: National League 0, American League 0

The National League threatened early after Corbin Burnes retired Ketel Marte to open the game. Shohei Ohtani earned a trip to first base after working the count full, and after Burnes got his second out of the inning, Bryce Harper moved Ohtani to third on a pretty opposite-field double. 

But Burnes rallied to set down catcher William Contreras, and the former teammates had an amusing reunion as they "collided" at first base.

The National League lineup features Shohei Ohtani for the first time in his return to the All-Star stage after signing a record 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers last winter, while the American League lineup is headlined by MLB home run leader and New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge. Paul Skenes, the 21-year-old fireballing rookie sensation for the Pittsburgh Pirates, starts for the NL while Baltimore Orioles ace Corbin Burnes starts for the AL.
