Both teams went scoreless late into the match, but France was finally able to break through after Kolo Muani's shot deflected off a Belgian defender and into the net. France will face the winner of Portugal and Slovenia in the quarterfinal round.

Despite struggling with the feel of the mask, Kylian Mbappé continued to make plays for Les Bleus. He forged his way into the box to set up Aurélien Tchouaméni for a power shot, but Tchouaméni's shot flew over the crossbar.

Both teams worked hard to get shots on goal in the first half, and there was perhaps not a better opportunity to open the scoring than this header from Marcus Thuram. But the powerful header was truck just wide right.

Belgium looked dangerous on this set piece in the 24th minute, and nearly found a goal on the free kick, but Mike Maignan was having none of it as he laid out to deflect the ball out of the pitch.

The referees kept a tight hold on things from the opening whistle, showing they would not hesitate to crack down on fouls committed. Both Aurélien Tchouaméni and Antoine Greizmann received yellows for these infractions early on.
