Portugal vs. Slovenia highlights: Portugal advances on penalties after 0-0 draw

Diogo Costa started things off right for Portugal, keeping the momentum going from his incredible save during extra time. He dove to the right to make the save and give his squad the advantage.

Cristiano Ronaldo followed with a big redemption penalty goal, beating Jan Oblak this time to put Portugal up 1-0.

Costa again stopped Slovenia on its second attempt, guessing right by diving left to thwart the attempt.

In stepped Bruno Fernandes, who froze Oblak by going lower left to give Portugal a two-goal advantage.

Costa's heartbeat appeared calm as ever as he again deflected Slovenia's shot. This time it was against Benjamin Verbič, whose shot was aimed towards the lower right corner of the goal.

Bernardo Silva punched Portugal's ticket to the quarterfinals by fooling Oblak on Portugal's third kick, sealing the victory and sending Portugal on to meet France in the next round!

Pepe nearly became the scapegoat of the game after losing the ball on his side of the field, opening a chance for Benjamin Šeško to go one-on-one against goalkeepr Diogo Costa. Šeško decided to go lower right shelf, but Costa came up huge for Portugal with a game-preserving save.

Things got chippy late into extra time, and Slovenia's manager Matjaž Kek was sent off the pitch with a direct red card.

After stopping the rocket that came off the foot of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jan Oblak had less issue dealing with a soft header like this one. He made the save with ease, tipping the ball over the goalpost.

It's been a tough day for Cristiano Ronaldo, and he became emotional after having his penalty blocked. Ronaldo was seen crying in his huddle following the first half of extra time.

What. A. Save! In what seemed to be a foregone conclusion, Cristiano Ronaldo lined up for a penalty kick after Portugal was awarded a foul in the box. But he did so against a star goalkeeper in Jan Oblak. 

And it was Oblak who came up victorious, leaving Ronaldo in tears after failing on what was his clearest attempt of the day. Ronaldo has failed to convert three of the nine penalties he's taken in international competition.

Slovenia was determined not to go to penalty kicks, displaying aggressive attacking tactics in the first minutes of extra time. But Portugal's defense was having none of it.

Portugal fans were deflated after Cristiano Ronaldo could not come away with a goal on this one-on-one chance in front of Slovakia's goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo's Portugal teammates found more trouble of their own, missing an ideal opportunity to put away a goal.

Slovenia earned perhaps its best opportunity of the day on a blistering counterattack, but Benjamin Šeško missed his shot wide right.

Portugal continued to attack strongly, but just couldn't come away with a score to broke the ice.

Another no-go from Cristiano Ronaldo. But he certainly put Jan Oblak in a tough position to stop this one with the speed he put on it.

The first half was a stalemate for Portugal, which was painful given that it had a number of chances to score, including these misplayed attempts just before the whistle.

It took just seconds for Slovenia to get into the box on the counterattack, but France was speedy on the defense, pushing the ball out of bounds for a corner attempt.

Portugal had an abundance of chances in the game's opening minutes, and Cristiano Ronaldo was a large part of most of them. But CR7 again couldn't find paydirt on a leaping attempt after a ball was played into the box, while Bruno Fernandes didn't hit the ball on a sliding try either.

Cristiano Ronaldo was searching for a penalty after a pretty slide tackle from a Slovenian defender kept him from scoring a goal.

Portugal was eager to get Cristiano Ronaldo – who has yet to score in this tournament – the ball early. And it did just minutes into the match, but a crosser intended to be headed by the Portugal legend was just high. Rafael Leão was there to clean up the pass, but his shot attempt went high as well.

Portugal players watched in awe as France put away the deciding goal to move on to the quarterfinals. Portugal knows that France will be its next opponent should it win against Slovenia.

Meanwhile, Slovenia's fans were eager to do all they could to ensure that didn't happen.
