Brahmas vs. Showboats highlights: San Antonio pulls off late comeback

Despite trailing all game, the Brahmas completed their comeback effort by scoring a game-winning touchdown with less than 10 seconds to go in the fourth after QB Chase Garber found TE Cody Latimer in the end zone. 

San Antonio regained possession following their previous score due to a UFL rule that allows teams that are trailing (or tied) in the fourth quarter the alternate option of electing to retain possession on a fourth-and-12 play from their own 28-yard line as opposed to an onside kick. 

After completing the try, the Brahmas successfully drove down the field and came away with the touchdown.

San Antonio punched in its second TD of the second half on a pass from QB Chase Garbers to WR Jontre Kirklin which cut into Memphis' lead. Unfortunately, the Brahmas were unable to convert on a 3-point attempt which left San Antonio trailing by five with less than a minute to go in the contest.

4:25 - 4th: Showboats 19, Brahmas 8

San Antonio threatened to score late in the fourth, but a crucial interception from QB Chase Garbers to Memphis CB Delrick Abrams Jr. shattered the Brahmas' hopes of coming away with a TD.

8:24 - 4th: Showboats 19, Brahmas 8

Once again, the Showboats were unable to come away with a touchdown after another promising drive. Nonetheless, Memphis kicker Matt Coghlin chipped in his fourth field goal of the day on a 22-yard attempt.

14:22 - 4th: Showboats 16, Brahmas 8

The Brahmas erased the shutout in the fourth quarter, as QB Chase Garbers found WR Marquez Stevenson in the end zone for San Antonio's first score of the contest. The Brahmas then chipped in two more points to keep things close.

Memphis threatened to score a touchdown after QB Case Cookus hit WR Jonathan Adams for a 48-yard catch that brought the Showboats deep within San Antonio territory. However, the Showboats were forced to settle for another field goal by Matt Coghlin after the Brahmas defense held firm in the red zone.

After Memphis forced San Antonio to punt from deep within its own territory, the Showboats were able to take advantage on the ensuing possession by driving into field goal range and chipping in three more points before halftime.

What seemed to be a promising drive for Memphis ended in a turnover, as San Antonio took the ball away from the Showboats on a recovered fumble.

Memphis wasn't able to cash in seven following San Antonio's turnover, but the Showboats were still able to extend their lead on a 23-yard field goal by kicker Matt Coghlin.

In spite of San Antonio's defense forcing a Memphis punt, the Showboats got the ball right back on a fumble recovery following a hard hit on Brahmas signal-caller Chase Garbers. 

7:20 - 1st: Showboats 7, Brahmas 0

With momentum on their side after a monster kickoff return, the Showboats wasted no time cashing in for the game's first score. QB Case Cookus found WR Daewood Davis in the end zone for the touchdown, and Memphis took a 7-0 lead after Cookus' ensuing successful one-point conversion attempt.

There are no extra point conversions using the kicker in the UFL this season. Instead, teams must run an offensive play, receiving one point from two yards out, two points from five yards out and three points from 10 yards out.

Teams went for one point 25.6% of the time, converting 43.6% of those attempts, according to XFL statistics from last season, while teams went for two points 63.2% of the time and converted 39.7% of those attempts. As expected, teams went for three points the least — just 11.2% of the time – converting 20.8% of those attempts.

Collins, a former running back for the Showboats who also played five seasons in the NFL between 2016-2018 and 2020-21 for Seattle and Baltimore, died in a motorcycle crash in South Florida in August 2023. He was 28.

His brother was at Saturday's game to accept his jersey.

Collins ran for 1,997 yards in his NFL career. He spent his rookie season with the Seahawks and the next two years with the Ravens. He missed the 2019 season before returning to Seattle for two more seasons (2020-21). Collins was described as "a joy to be around and someone whose light shined brightly" by Ravens coach John Harbaugh. Collins missed the 2022 season before signing with the Showboats for the 2023 USFL campaign, racking up 98 rushing yards, 35 receiving yards and two scores (one rushing and one passing) in three games before being placed on injured reserve.

Collins also had a standout career at the University of Arkansas, where he rushed for more than 1,000 yards in all three of his seasons. He’s second to Darren McFadden on the school’s career rushing list.

Two of the top quarterbacks in the UFL — San Antonio’s Chase Garbers and Memphis' Case Cookus — face off against one another when the Showboats host the Brahmas on Saturday.

Garbers and Cookus checked in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in the most recent edition of RJ Young's MVP power rankings. Saturday's tilt is also a battle between the No. 2 and No. 3 teams on Young's latest UFL power rankings list.

Garbers completed 76% of his passes and accounted for three total touchdowns (two passing and one rushing) in his team’s 27-12 win against the DC Defenders in Week 1, while Cookus finished with 201 passing yards and one score in the Showboats' 18-12 victory over the Houston Roughnecks.

Other players to keep an eye out for are Brahmas OLB Delontae Scott and LB Jordan Williams, both of whom are UFL Defensive Player of the Year candidates this year. Scott led the Brahmas with 7.5 sacks last season, the second-most in the XFL, en route to earning All-XFL honors, while Williams led the XFL in tackles (89). Also checking in on that list is Showboats LB Vontae Diggs, who finished with 69 combined tackles, three interceptions and 2.5 sacks in 2023.

Brahmas WR Cody Latimer and Showboats RB Darius Victor are two of the top offensive players to watch this season. A former second-round pick by Denver, where he won a Super Bowl, Latimer led the XFL's Orlando Guardians receiving last season, finishing with 50 receptions for 593 receiving yards and four touchdowns on his way to earning All-XFL honors. Victor leads the running game in Memphis. He totaled 554 rushing yards and four touchdowns in 2023.
