Bullpen spoils win Sunday Civale tossed a quality start versus the Cubs on Sunday, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out two over six innings. He did not factor into the decision.

Impact Civale struggled with his command at times during his outing, as he did plunk two batters and threw 58 of his 94 pitches for strikes but was able to power through by inducing weak contact. The Cubs did not get an extra-base hit off him and didn't find their way onto the scoreboard until the fifth frame. The two strikeouts were a season-low but he's now allowed two runs or less in six of eight starts this year and is pitching to an impressive 2.96 ERA, 1.18 WHIP to go with a 35:16 K:BB in 45.2 innings. He lines up for a favorable home start versus the Royals before the break.

Impact Four of the six hits and three of the four runs Civale gave up came in the third inning and the Brewers got to him once more in the fourth. He managed to get to six innings for a second consecutive start and was able to keep the ball in the park, but gave up more than two runs for the first time since he returned from injury June 2. Civale been effective thus far, putting together a 3.18 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 33:15 K:BB over 39.2 innings and lines up to face the Cubs on the road next weekend.

Impact Civale picked up his second quality start of the season Tuesday -- his first since returning from an oblique injury -- while his six punchouts were his second most of the campaign. After surrendering three homers over his last two starts Civale couldn't keep the ball in the park once again Tuesday, giving up a solo home run to Tony Kemp in the seventh. Since being activated from the injured list Civale is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA and a 16:9 K:BB over three starts (16 innings). He's tentatively scheduled to toe the rubber next versus the Brewers in Cleveland.

Impact Civale gave up solo home runs to Fernando Tatis and Manny Machado. While the seven strikeouts were a season high, Civale's four walks were also his most in five starts, and he needed 95 pitches (52 strikes) to get through the short outing. The right-hander has generally been solid this season, though he's completed six innings just once. He's at a 2.67 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB over 27 innings through five starts. Civale is lined up for a favorable home start versus the Athletics next week.

Impact In what was the third and perhaps final start of his minor-league rehab assignment, Civale tossed 88 pitches (54 strikes) while working into the fifth inning. Though Civale wasn't as efficient as he had been over his prior two rehab outings, his ability to approach 90 pitches suggests he's ready to return from the 15-day injured list, perhaps as soon as Friday in Minnesota. The Guardians will likely clear a spot in the rotation for Civale by optioning Hunter Gaddis to Triple-A, but the team will have a tougher decision to make once Triston McKenzie (shoulder) comes off the 60-day IL as soon as Sunday or early next week. Young hurlers Logan Allen and Tanner Bibee have both made strong cases for permanent starting roles, and the Guardians could have to expand to a six-man rotation to make room for both pitchers as well as Civale and McKenzie.

With Triston McKenzie (shoulder) potentially making his final rehab start Tuesday, the Guardians will soon have some tough decisions to make with the rotation. Hunter Gaddis -- who is starting Sunday versus St. Louis -- will almost certainly lose his spot once either Civale or McKenzie is activated, but unless the Guardians move to a six-man rotation, one of the two high-performing rookie starters -- Tanner Bibee or Logan Allen -- could lose his spot to make room for the two veterans. Assuming Civale navigates his upcoming minor-league outing smoothly, he could be cleared to join the big-league rotation as soon as Friday in Minnesota.
