Impact Kelly started eight of Arizona's first 11 games but has now sat for three of the last four. His .172/.273/.207 slash line through his first 33 plate appearances doesn't exactly make a great case for any kind of heavy workload, though that sample is of course quite small. Stephen Vogt will catch Saturday.

Impact After going hitless over his first 10 at-bats, Kelly has produced three hits, including his first extra-base hit, over his last six plate appearances. While many on the Diamondbacks' roster are slumping to start the season, which could prompt lineup changes, Kelly could have a longer leash than most, even with Arizona promoting catching prospect Daulton Varsho. Varsho's promotion has prompted speculation as to where he will get his at-bats, but in addition to catcher, he can play the outfield and serve as a designated hitter.

Impact Yates entered Sunday's contest while it was tied, but after striking out Arizona catcher Carson Kelly, he allowed four of the next five runners to reach base. The two runs Yates allowed were enough to stick him with the loss, despite the Padres' comeback effort in the bottom of the ninth. It's an unusually poor outing for the 33-year-old closer, who posted a 1.19 ERA and 0.89 WHIP across 60.2 innings in 2019. Both of his 2020 appearances have come in non-save situations so far.

Bumgarner's batterymate Arizona manager Torey Lovullo indicated Kelly will be Madison Bumgarner's regular catcher, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

Impact Kelly will be the Diamondbacks' regular catcher during the 60-game season, so he may turn out to be a few of the staff's regular backstops. "There are certain familiarities that pitchers and catchers develop with one another," Lovullo said. "Obviously we're going to count on Carson in a very heavy manner. If it goes well, I'm going to continue to stay with it." Kelly went hitless in three at-bats in Friday's season-opening loss to the Padres.
