Dom Nuñez - Lands minor-league deal with Cubs Nunez signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Monday.

Impact Nunez has made major-league appearances for the Rockies in three of the last four seasons but was claimed off waivers by the Giants in early November before being designated for assignment a week later. He'll now join the Cubs organization, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him serve as a non-roster invitee during spring training.

Impact The exact terms of Hosmer's deal with Chicago aren't clear, but the 33-year-old is presumably joining the Cubs on a short-term pact with the expectation that he settles in as the team's Opening Day first baseman. The addition of Hosmer could hurt top prospect Matt Mervis' chances of breaking camp with the big club, though Mervis could still be an option at the Cubs' unsettled designated-hitter spot. While splitting time between San Diego and Boston in 2022, Hosmer slashed a pedestrian .268/.334/.382 with a career-low eight home runs to go with 44 RBI and 38 runs.

Impact Wieck will rejoin the Cubs after he missed the entire 2022 season due to a left elbow strain, an injury for which he later underwent Tommy John surgery in late July. Given the timeline associated with Tommy John procedures, Wieck is unlikely to be ready to begin a minor-league rehab assignment until late in the 2023 campaign, if at all, so the Cubs were keen on bringing him aboard on a two-year deal in order to get at least one fully healthy season out of him. The 31-year-old lefty was previously a weapon out of the big-league bullpen in 2021, when he allowed no runs over 17 innings and struck out 28 across 15 relief appearances for Chicago.
