Impact Cruz has turned in a 5.30 ERA and 1.41 WHIP through 52.2 innings this season, and he'll now be called upon to make his first start of the year in what figures to be a bullpen game for Cincinnati. Only seven of the 34-year-old's 61 appearances have lasted more than an inning, so he'll presumably be taken out of the game after recording the first three outs.

While the 31-year-old hasn't reached 50 pitches in an appearance this season, he owns a 3.19 ERA and 1.02 WHIP and tentatively lines up to face the Brewers on Sunday.

David Buchanan - Dealt to Reds The Phillies traded Buchanan to Cincinnati on Tuesday for cash considerations, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
Impact Buchanan returned from several years playing overseas to join the Phillies organization this season and primarily pitched for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. In 22 outings (16 starts) at Triple-A, the 35-year-old logged a 4.91 ERA with a 78:33 K:BB across 102.2 innings. He'll likely report to the Reds Triple-A affiliate in Louisville.

Impact Hinds takes Stuart Fairchild's (thumb) spot on the active roster as Fairchild hits the IL. Hinds hasn't been with the Reds since July 24 after going 12-for-40 (.316) with five homers during his first MLB stint. Though Fairchild served as Cincinnati's backup center fielder, all 10 of Hinds' big-league starts came in right field and it's unclear where the Reds intend to use the 23-year-old.

Stuart Fairchild - Placed on IL The Reds placed Fairchild on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to Aug. 26, with a left thumb sprain.
Impact It's unclear when Fairchild sustained the injury, but the sprained thumb will force him to the injured list. Rece Hinds was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to provide some depth in the outfield while TJ Friedl continues to start most games in center field.

Impact It's not a surprise to hear considering he's just a week removed from landing on the 10-day injured list, but it emphasizes that Candelario is not close to a return. The Reds presumably won't allow him to resume baseball activities until he's pain-free, and after that he'll need a little time to get ramped back up.

Impact McLain encountered a roadblock in his recovery from left shoulder surgery when he went down with a stress reaction in his rib cage earlier this month. He had resumed baseball activities but evidently at some point was shut down again. Bell noted that the testing McLain is going through is nearly finished and the infielder could resume swinging a bat again soon. There could still be time for McLain to make it back before the end of the season, but he can't afford any more setbacks.

Graham Ashcraft - Ruled out for rest of season Reds manager David Bell said Tuesday that Ashcraft (elbow) has resumed throwing but is unlikely to return this season, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Ashcraft has missed nearly two months of action with a right elbow strain and is simply going to run out of time to get ramped back up. The good news is that he should be able to have a normal offseason if he keeps progressing. It was a disappointing 2024 campaign for Ashcraft, who posted a 5.24 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 15 starts for the Reds.

Jakob Junis - Making start Tuesday Junis will start Tuesday's game against the Athletics, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact Junis' first appearance of the season with the Brewers back on April 2 was a start, but all 17 of his outings since then have come in relief. He has often gone multiple innings in those appearances, so this won't be a typical opener situation, but Junis also isn't stretched out for a normal start. With Nick Lodolo (finger) joining Hunter Greene (elbow) and Andrew Abbott (shoulder) on the injured list, Junis could be needed for multiple more starts.

Impact It's not clear how long Lodolo's finger has been bothering him, but worth noting is that he holds a 9.75 ERA over his last five starts. The left-hander will be eligible to return on Sept. 8, although it's uncertain at this point whether he has a shot to be back by that time. Jakob Junis is sliding into the rotation in Lodolo's place.

Impact Williamson, who threw two innings at the Reds' complex in Arizona last Thursday, is scheduled for three innings Tuesday in what will be the first rehab appearance of his second rehab assignment.
