Effective over two innings Tate pitched two perfect innings with no strikeouts in Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Athletics.

Impact After Wade LeBlanc and Tyler Wells combined to give up seven runs in the first four innings, the Orioles didn't have much of a chance at a win. Tate at least made sure it didn't get worse, as he pitched the seventh and eighth innings cleanly. He threw 12 of his 19 pitches for strikes. The 26-year-old right-hander has a 2.45 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 3:2 K:BB across 7.1 innings this season. He's picked up a pair of holds and one loss in eight outings.

Impact Tate needed only 11 pitches to retire the side in the bottom of the eighth. The 2015 first-round pick was solid in his second season, posting a 3.24 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and two holds across 16.2 innings in 2020. He only made 12 appearances -- the right-hander could be a versatile option in the Orioles' bullpen, capable of working in both long-relief and higher-leverage assignments. Tate isn't expected to be in the closer conversation.

Locks up bullpen spot Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Wednesday that Tate will be included on the Opening Day roster, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Impact Tate and Cole Sulser were awarded the final two spots in the bullpen over Travis Lakins, who was optioned to the minors. With Hunter Harvey (oblique) beginning the season on the 60-day injured list, the Orioles lack an obvious top candidate to close, but Tate isn't expected to warrant much early consideration for saves. Instead, he's expected to work in middle relief, with his past experience as a starter in the minors making him a candidate to cover multiple innings when needed.

Slated to pitch Wednesday Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Tate (finger) will make his Grapefruit League debut in Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Impact Tate finished the 2020 campaign on the injured list with a sprained finger on his throwing hand, but he doesn't appear to be facing any limitations thus far in spring training. He'll presumably be asked to cover an inning of relief in his first outing of the Grapefruit League slate.
