Impact McCullers has been completing side sessions for nearly a month while gradually increasing the intensity of his throws and incorporating all of his pitches, but the Astros haven't yet indicated when he'll be ready to face hitters. He's likely at least a week away from beginning a rehab assignment, so McCullers could have a tough time making it back from the 60-day injured list before the All-Star break in mid-July.

Jake Odorizzi - Gearing up for rehab assignment Odorizzi (lower leg) said he'll begin a rehab assignment Friday at Triple-A Sugar Land that will likely consist of two starts, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Impact Odorizzi declared himself ready for game action after he tested out his left foot/ankle injury Tuesday, when he threw a bullpen session and took part in fielding drills on the mound. Assuming the Astros intend to bring Odorizzi back in a starting role and he sticks to the schedule of two rehab outings, he'll tentatively line up to rejoin the Houston rotation as soon as July 4. Cristian Javier or Jose Urquidy are the most likely candidates to lose out on a spot in the rotation once Odorizzi is activated from the 15-day injured list.

Jeremy Peña - Increases activities Tuesday Pena (thumb) took swings in the batting cage and was spotted fielding groundballs Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Impact In his most extensive workout since landing on the 10-day injured list six days ago due to left thumb injury, Pena looked to be taking part without any discomfort. He'll be eligible to come off the IL on Friday, but the Astros haven't said that he'll be cleared to play by then. More clarity on Pena's situation should become available within the next day or two.

At Sugar Land, he'll be part of a catching group that includes one of the Astros' other top prospects in Korey Lee. Since Diaz also made starts at first base as well as the corner-outfield spots during his time at Corpus Christi, Lee still appears likely to see most of the work behind the plate.

Impact Montero struggled for a brief stretch in early June, allowing five earned runs across four appearances that spanned four innings. However, he's gotten back on track in his last two outings, allowing only a hit and a walk while striking out two across two scoreless frames. Montero has been excellent for the balance of the season, maintaining a 2.03 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB to go along with nine holds across 26.2 innings.
