Signs one-year deal Kiner-Falefa avoided arbitration Friday by signing a one-year, $2 million deal with the Rangers, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports.

Impact Kiner-Falefa moved out from behind the plate in 2020, spending all his time at third base and shortstop. His .280/.329/.370 slash line was poor for the hot corner but decent enough at short, where he's expected to spend the majority of his time this season.

Taking over at shortstop Kiner-Falefa will be the Rangers' starting shortstop in 2021, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Impact This is both a symbolic move and a baseball move, as Elvis Andrus (back) had been the team's starting shortstop for over a decade, and the Rangers are looking to usher in a new era. Kiner-Falefa is a great defender, but he hit a modest .280/.329/.370 with three home runs and eight steals in 58 games. That type of production is a better fit at shortstop than third base. This move also clears the way at third base for highly touted prospect Josh Jung, who could debut in 2021. Andrus will move to a bench role going forward.

Impact Kiner-Falefa ended a hitless streak Sunday and followed up Monday with his first extra-base hit in 12 games. The underlying Statcast metrics indicate he's an improved hitter relative to 2019, but Kiner-Falefa has out-performed his expected results in 2020. While there's reason to be more sanguine on Kiner-Falefa as a hitter, his batting profile may play better at shortstop than at third base.
