Four more RBI Sunday McCarthy went 3-for-5 with a triple, four RBI and a run scored in Sunday's win over the Phillies.

Impact McCarthy's big hit of the afternoon was a two-out, bases-clearing triple that put the Diamondbacks up 8-2 in the fifth. He then added on another RBI in the eighth with a base knock to center. McCarthy now has multiple hits in three of his last four games and has racked up 11 RBI over that span. Since July 27, he's slashing .444/.464/.741 with seven extra-base hits, 15 RBI and 11 runs scored. His reverse splits this season are eye-opening too. This year, he's slashing .369/.424/.488 against lefties compared to .275/.355/.435 against righties. For the season, McCarthy is now hitting .303/.375/.451 with six homers, 36 RBI, 45 runs, 16 steals and a 25:55 BB:K in 316 plate appearances.

This was his fifth multi-hit effort since July 30 -- over 11 games in that span, the outfielder has gone 15-for-36 (.417) with five extra-base hits and nine RBI. McCarthy isn't known for his power, having never hit more than eight homers in a single season. Impact McCarthy got the start against a left-hander while both Corbin Carroll and Alex Thomas opened the game on the bench. McCarthy's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning was a response to Philadelphia's four runs in the top of the frame. He later singled home a run in the ninth. McCarthy's swung a hot bat the last two weeks, going 19-for-41 (.463) with one home run, seven RBI, eight runs and three stolen bases. He's hit well against lefties this season, posting a .359/.419/.462 line against southpaws.

Impact McCarthy had started in eight of the Diamondbacks' previous nine games, but he still looks to be the club's fourth outfielder behind Corbin Carroll, Lourdes Gurriel and Alek Thomas. Though he's a left-handed hitter, McCarthy is slashing .360/.422/.467 over 83 plate appearances against southpaws this season and should continue to be a regular part of the starting nine when the Diamondbacks face lefties. McCarthy may have to settle for more of a part-time role, however, when the Diamondbacks face righties and have all their key outfielders available.

Impact McCarthy scored the first run of the game in the third inning as a result of a two-out triple and a MacKenzie Gore wild pitch. The outfielder finished with his second straight three-hit contest and his third multi-hit performance over his past five games. Over that span, McCarthy is batting a blistering .545 (12-for-22) with a double, two triples, five runs and two thefts.

Impact Though McCarthy doesn't have a direct path to an everyday role, Arizona has now been able to squeeze him into the lineup for five straight games while giving four days off to Joc Pederson, three to Alek Thomas and one apiece to Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel during that stretch. All of the absences for Pederson, Thomas and Carroll have come against left-handed pitching, so McCarthy at least looks to be viewed as a short-side platoon option, even though he's a left-handed hitter himself. McCarthy has helped his case for holding down a semi-regular role by going 9-for-18 with a stolen base, four runs and three RBI over the previous four contests.

Impact McCarthy was a thorn in Pittsburgh's side all night, reaching in all five of his trips to the plate while also sparking a two-run inning for Arizona in the fifth with a leadoff single. It marked the outfielder's first five-hit game of the season and he brought his season average up from .269 to .285 with the performance. For the month he's batting .317 (13-for-41) with three RBI, eight runs scored and two stolen bases. However, he's also recorded just three extra-base hits since June 16.

Impact A day after lefty-hitting McCarthy was held out of the starting lineup against a right-hander in favor of Alek Thomas, he was back in there Wednesday against a righty. The presumption is that Thomas will be in lineups most nights against right-handers, and that his absence Wednesday was due to his recent return from a three-month absence. McCarthy's playing time takes a hit with Thomas' return, but he can still have value in a part-time role. He's second on the club with 13 steals.

Impact McCarthy had been a regular against righties, but his playing time is set to take a hit, as the Diamondbacks welcomed back Alek Thomas from a hamstring injury. Thomas' injury, which kept him out for the last three months, resulted in more playing time for McCarthy. He hits lefties better than Thomas, but the righty-hitting Randal Grichuk (.817 OPS against lefties) should be the primary fill-in for Thomas against southpaws.
