Could make spring debut Thursday Springs (knee) is listed among the Rays' available relief options for Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Impact The Rays have been easing Springs along slowly this spring while he makes his return from a torn ACL suffered July 31 of last year, but the 29-year-old southpaw has seemingly reached the finish line in his recovery. Springs completed a live batting practice session Monday and is believed to have tested out his surgically repaired knee by fielding bunts over the past two days, which was the final hurdle he needed to clear before being available for games. Assuming he can make at least two or three relief appearances before the Grapefruit League slate comes to a close, Springs should be in good position to break camp as a member of the Rays' Opening Day bullpen.

On books for '22 season Springs (knee) and the Rays agreed Tuesday on a one-year, $947,500 contract to avoid arbitration, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Impact Before he tore the ACL in his right knee July 31 and required season-ending surgery, Springs proved to be a weapon out of the bullpen for the Rays. Over his 44.2 innings, Springs was prone to the long ball (nine home runs allowed) but otherwise dominated hitters to the tune of a 3.43 ERA and 63:14 K:BB. He picked up 10 holds and two saves along the way, but the Rays' wealth of quality relievers and manager Kevin Cash's preference to mix and match in the ninth inning will make it tough to extract consistent value from Springs or any of the team's other bullpen options. Springs threw a live batting practice session Monday and plans to test out his surgically repaired knee next week by jumping off the mound and fielding bunts, but his availability for Opening Day is in flux at the moment.

Impact Springs has yet to make his Grapefruit League debut, but his ability to face hitters at this stage in camp seemingly hints that he has a shot at being ready for Opening Day after tearing the ACL in his right knee July 31 of last year and undergoing surgery just over two weeks later. Before getting hurt, Springs had been a key piece out of the Tampa Bay bullpen, tossing 44.2 innings over 43 appearances while submitting a 3.43 and 63:14 K:BB and picking up 10 holds, five wins and two saves. If he gets a clean bill of healthy ahead of the start of the season, Springs will likely slot in as a setup man for Tampa Bay.
