Hanser Alberto - Swipes bag in loss Alberto went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 5-3 extra-innings loss to Cleveland.
Impact Playing time remains scarce for Alberto, and he's done nothing to earn more by going 5-for-23 (.217) across his last 10 games. The veteran infielder has a .259/.274/.376 slash line with one home run, 19 RBI, 22 runs scored and two stolen bases through 216 plate appearances. He figures to drop further on the depth chart given the recent return of Adalberto Mondesi. With Emmanuel Rivera also in the mix at the hot corner while Whit Merrifield and Nicky Lopez control the middle infield, Alberto figures to serve as a bench option for much of September.

Ervin Santana - Stuck with loss Santana (1-2) took the loss Wednesday versus Cleveland, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in one inning.
Impact Higher-leverage relievers Josh Staumont and Scott Barlow had already pitched, and Santana allowed Cleveland to scrape together a pair of runs in the 11th and take the game. The veteran right-hander has had few poor outings of late, as this was just the second time in his last 12 appearances he's allowed runs to score. Santana owns a 4.50 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 44:17 K:BB across 56 innings this season, mainly as a multi-inning reliever.

Adalberto Mondesi - Homers, steals base in return Mondesi went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, a stolen base and an additional run scored in Wednesday's loss to Cleveland.
Impact Mondesi missed over two months with an oblique injury, and he showed some rust by striking out three times in his return to action. However, the 26-year-old was dynamic when he didn't whiff. He singled in his first at-bat, was advanced to second, stole third and scored on a corresponding throwing error. Mondesi later blasted a 422-foot solo shot to left field for what ended up being the Royals' final run of the game. The oft-injured infielder could be a major factor down the stretch for fantasy managers who have patiently held onto him, particularly given his ability to rack up stolen bases in bunches.

Jackson Kowar - Posts best start of young career Kowar did not factor in the decision against Cleveland on Wednesday, pitching six innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six.
Impact The rookie right-hander posted an ugly 18.00 ERA across three outings earlier this season, but he looked like a different pitcher after being called up to start Wednesday. Kowar allowed only two hits through four scoreless innings before a two-out error led to a pair of fifth-inning runs, but he bounced back with a scoreless sixth frame, retiring his final two batters of the night via strikeout. The strong performance could earn Kowar another turn in the rotation, a scenario made more likely with Jakob Junis (shoulder) landing on the injured list Wednesday.

Impact Nicky Lopez has thrived as Kansas City's everyday shortstop while Mondesi has been on the shelf for the past two-plus months, and manager Mike Matheny isn't keen on moving the former off the position and potentially disrupting his rhythm while he's in the midst of the best run of his MLB career. Considering Mondesi had been an above-average defender at shortstop, he should hold his own while moving to a position that requires less range. For fantasy purposes, the biggest questions for Mondesi are whether he's able to pick up enough starts at the hot corner to gain eligibility at the position heading into 2021, and how frequently he'll run in September after contending with myriad lower-body injuries this season. Given how often he's been banged up this season, counting on Mondesi to deliver another September to remember -- he slashed .356/.408/.667 with six home runs and 16 steals in the final month of 2020 -- may be wishful thinking.

Impact The addition of Kowar will give the other Kansas City starters some extra rest between outings, but the 24-year-old right-hander won't necessarily become a fixture in the rotation in September. He faltered badly in a three-outing stint with the big club back in June (18.00 ERA, 3.20 WHIP in five innings), and he wasn't overly impressive upon returning to Triple-A, submitting a 5.14 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 49 innings.
